Liam Leslie Galaty

Suicide Prevention

Liam was a straight-A student, a star athlete, had a loving family, and lots of friends. He showed no signs that he was depressed or thinking about suicide. If he was depressed, he hid it well.

In the weeks before he died, he was very ill with food poisoning. He lost 15 pounds and was prescribed a very powerful anti-nausea medicine. He could not play soccer and was preparing  for final exams. We will never know why Liam committed suicide, but he may have been functionally depressed, a condition brought on by sickness and stress.

Those who have attempted suicide say that they felt like a giant wet blanket had been thrown on top of them, from which they could not escape. Nor could they see the world beyond. Death by suicide was their only way out.

We imagine Liam experienced something similar the morning he took his own life.

Parents, please, talk to your child about suicide. We talked to Liam about everything - alcohol, sex, drugs. We never thought to ask him about suicide.

Kids, please, if you are down or depressed, talk to someone, anyone. You don't have to face the darkness alone.
